7 Food Swaps To Help You Eat Healthier

January 7, 2015

At times, New Year’s Resolutions can seem overwhelming and daunting. Ideally, you want to create goals that make meaningful and purposeful change in your life … changes that can be sustained for the long-term and become a part of the fabric of who you are. We’ve come up with 7 easy food swaps that will make it simpler to be healthier and happier in 2015.

  1. Switch your dip – Choose salsa or hummus instead of cream-based dips. These fresh and flavorful swaps have more nutrients and less calories than traditional cheese-based dips and spreads.

  2. Go Greek Anytime a recipe calls for sour cream, swap it out for Greek yogurt. This delicious swap is packed with protein and has less fat. We can’t get enough of this light Cilantro Dip, which does the swap perfectly!

  3. Bring on the bubbly – Sparkling water is so refreshing and there’s just no comparison when you measure the health benefits vs. traditional soda. The Soda Stream allows you to make affordable sparkling water in 30 seconds and you can even add healthy flavors!

  4. Ahhh-vocado – Avocados are packed with so many health benefits. This superfood includes Vitamins K, C, B5, B6, and E … and that’s just the tip of the healthy iceberg. Did you know you can swap out butter and mayo for avocado? Spread it on bread, mix it with tuna … the options are endless!

  5. Coffee Conundrum – Fancy coffee drinks are really hard to give up. But the reality is that they contain enough calories to send you into sticker shock. Instead of going cold turkey, try substituting your Frappuccino for a regular coffee every other day, and you’ll lose 100 calories or more each time.

  6. Muffin Top – While this is a word that’s typically not thought of as healthy, in this case it’ll save you 120 calories! Swap out a hamburger bun for an English muffin at your next burger night and you’ll enjoy that delicious meal all the more, knowing you made a smart choice. If you really want to bump up the nutritional factor, make it a whole wheat muffin and you’ll feel fuller faster from the added fiber.

  7. Skinny starch – Did you know that cauliflower can deliver an entire day’s worth of Vitamin C? Swap out a medium potato for a cup of cauliflower and you’ll cut your calories by over 75%! Cauliflower is a versatile vegetable that can be mashed, blended, or pureed into a soup or faux mashed potatoes.

These simple swaps will be easy to maintain all year long, and the best part is you won’t have to sacrifice flavor. Cheers to a healthier and happier you in 2015!
